Charles Tyson Yerkes main achievement is also below ground and is familiar to millions who use the London Underground every day. Yerkes was a 19th Century entrepreneur who went onto become involved in Chicago’s public transportation system in the 1880’s using a combination of complex financial arrangements and underhanded practices to achieve his goals. By 1892 he had decided to improve his public image by funding what became known as the Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin before arriving in London in the early 1900’s to extend and electrify parts of the Underground system to great effect. The events of Yerkes life inspired the novel, The Financier, by Theodore Dreiser.
